… I mean, catch can bwoyyyyyy
This install is long over due.
VTEC B Series engines have “OEM catch cans” known as the Breather Box on the back of the engine. That’s where the PCV valve is located as well. There’s nothing wrong with the “OEM catch can” but we all know an aftermarket one is much more effective. There are closed systems and open systems. For me, I went with an open system.
There are many ways to install a catch can. I went with the very basic setup; the PCV valve hose to catch can and valve cover nipple hose to the catch can. This Open Air system is also the same setup that a lot of N1 cars in Japan use, but depending on rules or preference, tuners utilize the washer reservoir as a “catch can” seen here:
When people use a vented-to-air catch can (Open Air) setup like this, some drill out the PCV valve to eliminate the one way valve inside or they pull out the PCV valve and insert a hose where the PCV valve went. I decided replaced the PCV valve with a 3/8 to 1/2 straight-through barbed fitting like this:
Then I inserted the fitting where the PCV valve went on the Breather Box. I attached a hose to the fitting then to the catch can.
Next is the valve cover nipple hose to the catch can. Note: I also used a clear braided hose so I can monitor whats’s going into the can. This clear braided hose has a high temp rating, but NOT made for vacuum.
Done. Pretty simple.
This setup works if you are NA. If you are FI, I would do some research to see which setup is best for your build.
